Flotilla

Flotilla (Montreal, 2006) es el nombre de una agrupación canadiense que gracias a su disco, A thousand words for water, 2009, ha llegado a ser comparada con Portishead. O para ser exacto ha sido llamada una especie de Portishead, sólo que más optimista, por la revista Exclaim!. Se trata de uno de esos grupos que inevitablemente llaman la atención de forma inmediata, y eso es algo en extremo complicado en este momento. Bastó con que filtraran tres canciones a la red para captar la atención del mundo. La voz de Veronica Charnley alcanza unos matices envidiables y evocadores: remiten a la montaña, los lagos, los bosques, al encierro de la campiña canadiense. Evocan rincones interiores muy específicos: esclarecedores, nostálgicos, esperanzadores, que acompañados por la riqueza de las composiciones de Geof Holbrook (bajista, tecladista, productor y arreglista de la banda) atacan directamente a las fibras emocionales de quien escucha. ¿Qué escuchamos, pues? Un harpa clásica (a cargo de Eveline Grégoire Rousseau), acompañada de cuernos y trombones y guitarras; sintetizadores, un rock muy fino, muy canadiense, si cabe: pacífico, cariñoso, muy suave. Sus canciones son excéntricas a la vez que contemplativas. El agregado perfecto para un viaje por carretera.

Para afinar los detalles de su última producción, los Flotilla se encerraron en las montañas (eso se hace evidente); se dedicaron al álbum, a la composición de nuevas canciones para hacer crecer su repertorio en directo y a la preparación de un show en el Banff Centre de Montreal, transmitido en vivo a nivel nacional. Como resultado final han alcanzado, de momento, un impulso musical que además de bello y extraño, nos parece exquisitamente moderno. Pop independiente del más alto nivel. Una voz definitiva en el panorama musical actual. Sus influencias incluyen a Deerhof, Joni Mitchell, Kings of Convenience, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Björk… Pero es la mezcla del harpa, con las composiciones vanguardistas y la voz de Veronica Charmley, lo que definitivamente construye una propuesta fina, digna de ser seguida con lupa.

Flotilla

Flotilla (Montreal, 2006) is the name of a Canadian band that thanks to their last album, A thousand words for water, 2009, has been compared to (all-mighty) Portishead. Or more accurately: Flotilla has been called a more optimistic Portishead by Exclaim! Magazine. It is one of those bands that inevitably gets your attention in a second. And that is not easy nowadays. They only had to filter a couple songs into the net to get worldwide attention. Veronica Charnley’s voice reaches enviable and evocative shades: they evoke very specific inner corners: clarifying, nostalgic, full of hope... and along with Geof Holbrook’s (bassist, keyboardist, producer and arrangements) compositions they attack directly into the listener’s emotional fibers. What do we listen then? A classic harp (played by Eveline Grégoire Rousseau), accompanied by french horns and a trombone and guitars and synthesizers: a very smooth rock. Very Canadian, if it may: peaceful, warm, very soft. Their songs are eccentric and contemplative. The perfect company for a quiet road trip through the forest.

Flotilla obviously went up a mountain to polish the last details of their last album (one of the most appealing of the year for many), but also to write new songs for their live repertoire and to get ready for their next Montreal’s Banff Centre gig; broadcasted live nationally. At the moment they’ve reached a beautiful yet weird, and undeniable modern, musical place. High ranking indie pop. A definitive voice of the present. Their influences include Deerhof, Joni Mitchell, Kings of Convenience, Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Björk…

But it’s the fusion of the classical harp with the avant-garde compositions and Veronica Charmley’s voice which definitively builds a fine project, worthy of being followed with a magnifying glass in the years to come.
