alasVALS

alasVALS (Buenos Aires-Londres, 2004) es una banda transoceánica de corte atmosférico; es un sonido cálido que se adentra en un espacio desolador y lo convierte lentamente en un lugar habitable y ávido de esperanza. Mezcla los vientos fríos del Reino Unido con el candor de lo latinoamericano. Como banda se conformaron en 2004, aunque Silvia Demetilla (vocalista y letrista; sintetizadores, órgano y laptop) ya había compuesto algunos temas previamente. En ese año comenzó a grabar con David Aguirre (arreglista y programador; sintetizadores, piano y órgano), a quien conoció a través de su profesora de canto. Silvia llegó a Londres en el 2001 y fue vocalista de Lautrec, grupo que David admiraba y que fue sólo el primer vínculo entre ellos antes de decidir colaborar juntos, aunque en la distancia.

La música de alasVALS es innegablemente ambiental y etérea; lo que le da un toque absolutamente contemporáneo, plagado una serie de elementos trip hop y folk, e incluso de música culta. Remite al desarraigo y a la pérdida, pero con voluntad de búsqueda, como algo profundamente hispano perdido en el espacio, solitario pero cálido, precisamente como un extravío latinoamericano buscándose a sí mismo en las sórdidas calles de Londres.  Digamos que la distancia juega un papel protagónico en esta música nueva, electrónica pero amable, que ha sorprendido tanto a la comunidad latinoamericana como al resto de habitantes de esta capital.  La distancia, o el alejamiento, provoca un efecto curioso: una especie de regreso a las raíces, pero desde una perspectiva distinta, adecuada a una realidad sorprendente, novedosa de puro inesperada. El viajante es capaz de asir aquello que brota desde lo más profundo al tiempo que incorpora a su imaginario todos los detalles de la superficie. Se convierte en un ser extraño, mezcla de una persona anterior o primigenia con otra, inmersa en un espacio bizarro que poco a poco se convierte en un lugar propio. A eso remite alasVALS, evocadores de paisajes inhabitables que se vuelven cercanos; una especie de desarraigo cariñoso y personalísimo. “Cisne mecánico”, por ejemplo, escrito en Kingston, Inglaterra, es uno de los temas que nos han dejado boquiabiertos, tanto por su profundad como por su textura y problemática. Es un canto a la supervivencia, a las pruebas arduas y a la constante tentación de la vuelta y de la renuncia que sufre el que emigra lejos. No por nada lo escribió Silvia, según afirma, un día en el que encontró el secreto de la felicidad. 

Canta tanto en castellano como en inglés, pero es su voz en español la más sorprendente, tanto, que se superpone a la música como un elemento embriagante y exótico; y se convierte en imán incluso para aquellos que no entienden nuestra lengua. Se trata de una voz que crece (como la hierba) entre sonidos tranquilos y que explora la profundidad de sus emociones; una sorpresa en extremo agradable, ligera, casi exquisita. Desde Inglaterra participan también Natalie Sedgwick (violín y melódica) y Therese Bann (Flauta, Tablas Indias, ocarina y tantísimos otros objetos sonoros). Su percusionista, Nando Gómez, falleció en 2008 y es a él a quien está dedicado el tema UniversalFilia, disponible aquí por cortesía de la banda, tras haber dejado una marca imborrable en el proceso creativo  de este proyecto. “Felicidad Equidistante” su primer álbum también esta dedicado al paso de Nando por la banda.

Sus influencias son amplias: Astrud Gilberto, Diana Ross, Massive Attack, Cocteau twins, Bebel Gilberto, Aretha Franklin, Coco Rosie, Beck, Tricky, Bjork, Regina Spektor, Röyksopp, Morcheeba, Portishead... Y además, a través de los sitios http://www.sapodeotropozo.com.ar y http://www.latinalternativa.co.ukSilvia se han dedicado a promocionar músicas latinoamericanas alternativas en el Reino Unido; especialmente enfocada a la comunidad argentina en ese país.  Su disco, Felicidad Equidistante (2008), está disponible en su página de internet, donde también es posible escuchar sus canciones, serenas y movedizas; su fusión de tango contemporáneo, tan argentino como universal. El nombre del álbum hace honor a una sensación específica: la felicidad que siempre parece lejana, equidistante del lugar donde nos encontramos, ya sea Londres o Buenos Aires; o cualquiera que sea la ciudad por donde transitamos, ávidos de un algo esperanzador; ávidos de ahuyentar el abismo.

alasVALS (Buenos Aires-London, 2004) is a transoceanic band with an ambient flavour; a warm sound that penetrates a lonely space slowly transforming it into a inhabitable, hopeful place. They blend the cold winds of the UK with the warmth of Latin America. The band was formed in 2004, even though Silvia Demetilla (Vocals /songs/ keyboard/ synth/ laptop) had already written some of the songs before that. In that year she started recording with David Aguirre (Programming/ piano/ keyboard/ synth/ arrangements), who she met thanks to their singing teacher. Silvia moved to London in 2001 and became the lead singer of Lautrec, a band admired by David and this became one of the first links between them before deciding to collaborate, despite the distance. alasVALS music is undeniably ethereal and atmospheric, something which gives it a totally contemporary taste, full of trip hop, folk, and even classical elements. It gives a sense of uprooting and loss but with a will for constant searching, just like something deeply Hispanic lost in outer space. Lonely but warm, just like a lost Latin American trying to find themselves in the squalid streets of London. The fact is that distance plays a very important role in this new –electronically gentle– music, which has impressed both Latin American and local listeners.  Distance, or estrangement, then, has a curious effect: a kind of returning to one’s roots but from a whole different perspective, adapted to an ever surprising reality, full of unexpected novelties. The traveller is able to grasp whatever gushes up from deep within at the same time as incorporating every detail from the surface into his own inner universe.  He becomes a strange being. A mixture of the previous person he was originally with another, immersed in a bizarre place that little by little becomes a familiar one he may call his own. That’s what alasVALS is about: evoking  uninhabitable landscapes suddenly bringing them close up, a kind of gentle uprooting that says goodbye to sadness. “Cisne mecánico”, for example, is one of the songs that astonished us not just because of its depth and texture, but also thanks to its theme. It’s a hymn to survival and adaptability, about the constant temptation to return and resign that pursues the one who emigrates far from home. A song full of strength, it’s not a coincidence then that Silvia wrote it in Kingston, on a day in which she found the secret of happiness.

 

She sings in both English and Spanish. But it is her voice in Spanish which is most surprising since she imbues the music with an intoxicating, exotic colour, magnetically attracting even those who don’t understand a word of Spanish. Her voice grows (like grass) between those quiet sounds exploring the depths of her emotions. Natalie Sedgwick (Violin & melodica) and Therese Bann (Flute/ ocarina/ Indian tablas & many sonorous objects) are part of the project too. They accompany Silvia in the UK while David sends his material from Buenos Aires. Their percussionist, Nando Gómez, sadly died in 2008. UniversalFilia -included here thanks to the band-, was written in his honor and their first album “Felicidad Equidistante” is also dedicated to him. Their influences range from Astrud Gilberto to Beck, via Diana Ross, Massive Attack, Cocteau Twins, Bebel Gilberto, Aretha Franklin, Coco Rosie, Tricky, Bjork, Regina Spektor, Röyksopp, Morcheeba, Portishead…

The name of the album (Equidistant happiness) pays tribute to one specific feeling: happiness which always seems far away and equidistant to where we are, be it London or Buenos Aires, or whichever city we may be passing through, eager for hope and yearning to drive away the abyss.
