Dos proyectos. Cuatro piezas.

Cantártica abre su espacio a dos proyectos de vídeo destinados a exhibirse en galerías y festivales. Cuatro piezas que indagan en la capacidad del vídeo de extraer los elementos más descriptivos del espíritu de cada objeto, ya sea el ser humano o un paisaje. Una búsqueda hacia la esencia de lo retratado desde un lenguaje especialmente austero, casi matemático.

El artista español Breixo Viejo realiza en Portraits una serie de retratos de personas anónimas que se presentan automatizadas a través de la escalera mecánica que las lleva. Breixo Viejo mantiene en secreto el aspecto de las caras de los personajes retratados, eliminando del vídeo la posibilidad de ver una emoción directa. Sin embargo, no genera por ello un desconocimiento total, muy al contrario, permiten la recreación del voiyer que puede sustraer la esencia, incluso, la intimidad del cuerpo, mediante la imagen abstracta del nacimiento del pelo. Enmarcadas en el contexto de una ciudad, las personas se presentan como entes individuales que  generan imagen e identidad del lugar al entrar en su mecánica.

Tower Hamlets Video Project es un proyecto en construcción llevado a cabo por tres cineastas del barrio Tower Hamlets de Londres. Cantártica ofrece los dos primeros vídeos de lo que se ha planteado como una serie más amplia. Se trata de las aportaciones al proyecto de Peter Wilshere, 8 Trains near the Estate y Nizam Shirani, H Square. Wilshere consigue hacer un retrato de formas austeras pero esencialmente evocadoras de la vida privada de los hombres al caer la noche. El trabajo de Shirani, se acerca con más contundencia a las imágenes frías de una cámara de vigilancia, buscando en la forma y el contenido, el límite entre lo público y lo privado.

Two Projects. Four Pieces.

Cantartica welcomes two video projects designed to be exhibited in a gallery space or the festival circuit. These four pieces query the capacity of video, as a format, to extract the most descriptive elements of objects, their spirit, be it a human beings or landscapes; a search towards the essence of the portrayed from an especially austere language, almost mathematic in its approach.  

The Spanish artist Breixo Viejo, works in Portraits, a series of images of anonymous people represented by means of the escalators that transport them, automated. Breixo Viejo keeps the faces of his subjects a secret, eliminating from the video the possibility to see a direct emotion. However, this does not helps us achieve a total detachment; on the contrary, it allows a voyeuristic recreation that allows the subtraction of the fundamental nature of its subjects, even, the intimacy of their body, through the abstract image lent by the subject’s hairline, for example. Framed within an urban context, these people are presented as individual entities that help to generate the image and identity of the place once they participate in the mechanics of it all.

Tower Hamlets Video Project is the work in progress of three film makers from the Tower Hamlets district in London. Cantartica brings us the first two videos of what’s set out to be a more extended series. What we’ll see are the contributions to the project by Peter Wilshere, 8 Trains near the Estate and Nizam Shirani, H Square. Wilshere succeeds in making a portrait of an austere nature, but particularly evocative, of the private lives of men at dusk. Shirani’s work closes in more compellingly to the gelid images of a security camera; seeking in form and content the limits between the public and private.
